Small Group Intensive
“Creating a Standalone Contracting Business That Doesn’t Depend on You”
Are these true for you?
- If I want it done right, I have to do it myself.
- I’m always fighting fires.
- If I take a vacation or get sick, my business is a mess when I get back.
If you said yes to even one of these, your business is too dependent on you and this program can significantly improve your situation.
What’s wrong with an owner-dependent business? Nothing, if you enjoy those 80 hour weeks, not seeing your family, and the continuous frustration of never making progress. Owner-dependency is highly toxic to both the business and the contractor: They’re inefficient, have little saleability, can’t grow, and make the contractor a slave to the business.
Our Small Group Intensive Program brings the power of our top-of-the-line One-on-One Immersion program to a small group environment. Like our other programs, the focus is on giving you the knowledge, proven tools and implementation techniques to create a business that doesn’t depend on you, and make you a top player in its market.
This program is basic blocking and tackling, and a lot of it. We provide the game plan, the training program, and the equipment. You get in shape, learn the plays, and win the games. You’ll even have teammates going through it all with you.
Here's what you'll get:
- Expert, step-by-step guidance in shifting from an owner operated model to a process/system-based business from a Senior CBS Coaches, all of whom have at least ten years of successful small business coaching experience.
- Bi-weekly group teleclass meetings. In these calls we'll cover assignment and progress from the prior meeting, answer questions, solve problems, and assign next steps.
- CBS exclusive workbooks, techniques and resource materials.
- Implementation checklists to guide you through the steps of taking the concepts and making them actually work in your business.
- Unlimited E-mail and phone "laser" support for individual questions, problems, advice.
- Members' forum where participants can share questions, samples and breakthroughs.
How does it work?
A week prior to each session, you'll be provided with course materials. You're expected to read it and be prepared to discuss in a group format during the session. This gives you the opportunity to review ideas with a Contractor's Business School Coach and also peers who may be experiencing the same "pain". At the end of the session, you'll be given "homework" to develop a tactical plan to address that month's topic. In the second monthly session, you'll learn how to effectively implement your plan.
What will be covered?
- Month #1:Your vision for the business: How to develop and define your future goals and translate them onto short-term targets. Determine the Key Performance Indicators that you’ll monitor to stay focused and on track.
- Month #2: Time analysis and management: 40 hours is plenty if you use it right. Determine where your time goes; learn which tasks are “owner-appropriate” and which to delegate or eliminate. Develop a plan to offload tasks to others.
- Month #3: Managing your financial information: Make sure you have the foundation in place to manage your financial information. We'll demystify P&Ls, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow Projections and look at how to use them in managerial decision making.
- Month #4: Your team: People are your biggest resource but often your biggest headache because of unclear roles and mismatched skills. You’ll identify the current boxes in your organization chart and begin to document their accountabilities and tasks in meaningful job descriptions. Outline your growth strategy and plan new positions you may need to reach your goals from the Vision Module.
- Month #5: Systems / procedures development: Define what a system is. Start a list of the important systems and procedures you need to create a stand-alone business and prioritize. Learn how to create bulletproof systems that let your employees get the results instead of you. Create a sample system of your own.
- Month #6: Leadership and delegation: Learn to lead effectively and produce consistent results without doing it all yourself. Create and prioritize an overall plan for development and delegation with the results identified in months 1-5. Review and discuss any related topics to creating your stand alone business.
What if I get stuck or have questions between meetings?
No problem. Your coach is always available for “laser coaching” via email or phone.
Do I have to participate in the meetings?
Yes, because much of the power of this program comes from the combined and shared knowledge of the participants: they’ll help you find solutions and avoid pitfalls and you’ll help them. But it’s no different than talking with your pals at the coffee joint. You’ll be among a small group of other contractors with the same questions and issues as you.
How big is the group?
Group size strictly limited to 6-8 participants, with no two participants in the same geographical area.
Who should attend?
This program is designed for and limited to contractors who:
- Are primarily involved in the building trades
- Have been in business at least 3 years
- Have revenues between $500,000 and $3,000,000
- Have at least 5 employees, other than the owner
- Business is profitable
How much time will it take?
Plan on 5-8 hours each week outside of the bi-weekly meetings. If you’re not prepared to do the work, please don’t sign up. It’s not fair to the other group members.
Will I be done with all the restructuring at the end of six months?
No. This program will give you the basic tools to transform your business in the six areas, but complete implementation depends on how much time and effort you invest and the state of your business right now.
When do the programs start?
The next program starts March 1, 2009 and runs through August 31, 2009.
Cost?
$495 per month, charged to your credit card. The same material in our One-On-One Immersion program would cost about $6,000. By using the group format, we can cut that in half.
How do I sign up?

Guarantee?
You bet: If you attend all the meetings, do the work, and feel at the end that you didn't get your money's worth, tell me and we'll refund whatever you think is fair (up to 100% of your fees). If you're not happy, I'm not happy.
Concerned that you won't be able to make it for regularly scheduled calls? If so, that’s another indicator of owner-dependence and upside-down priorities. Time management is the first step in becoming strategic in your business... learning to set aside time for appointments that are going to help your business long-term. These sessions should be treated like an appointment with your most important client - YOU - by making it a top priority to keep your business on track.
